Composer Phill Niblock will be speaking in Dave Sulzer's "Music, Math and Mind" class this coming Thursday (Oct. 12) from 6:10 PM -- 8:00 PM in room 320H Prentis Hall (the Computer Music Center). Niblock is one of the foundational figures in developing 'downtown' minimalist music, and for years ran the "Experimental Intermedia Foundation", a site where many seminal presentations and performances were given. His musical practice is extensive, as is his thinking about music and art. His compositions have been played throughout the world.
Phill Niblock has delivered inspiring and thought-provoking lectures in our class since the beginning. He began his career as a photographer, including working with the Duke Ellington band, and he possesses a deep appreciation of jazz history (along with a remarkable collection of 78s). Later, inspired by the minimalist painters of the 1960s, he emerged as perhaps the foremost composer working with drones. His work has been a significant influence on artists like Arthur Russell and Glenn Branca and serves as a cornerstone of adventurous minimalism in New York and around the world. He will be joining us via Zoom but it will be a very interactive lecture. Guests are welcome to join! Non-Columbia guests should RSVP by emailing [email protected]
