openwork

openwork is a peer-reviewed journal publishing research across experimental music and sound, technology, art, and performance. Interdisciplinary in scope, the journal serves as a platform for critically engaged work expressed through practice-based research, traditional scholarly research, and experimental practice. It supports and encourages submissions that expand or challenge conventional academic formats while maintaining editorial rigor and fostering dialogue across creative disciplines and industries. In particular, openwork welcomes submissions in which compositions, artworks, multimedia, and other non-text forms function as primary research outputs rather than as supplementary material to a conventional article.

openwork was founded in 2020 in partnership with the Computer Music Center and Columbia University Libraries. Today, the journal is managed by an editorial board comprised of researchers affiliated with the CMC as well as artists and scholars from institutions all around the world. Individuals looking to publish their work with openwork currently have two pathways.

For new, unpublished works, we encourage authors to submit to the journal during our yearly Call for Proposals, which are released in the Fall and are centered around an artistic theme relevant to the current moment. Submissions to the journal undergo two rounds of review: first by the editorial board, then under double-blind peer review. Accepted submissions are published on the journal’s website.

For previously published or premiered works, we encourage authors to submit to the openwork Gallery, a curated space for presenting experimental artistic and research practices that extend the conversations fostered within the journal. Submissions to the gallery are reviewed by the editorial board on a rolling basis (with no peer review stage), and accepted submissions are published in the journal’s quarterly newsletter.
