Annie Goh - Sonic Cyberfeminisms: Steering from alternative origins towards sonic counter technologies

Sonic Cyberfeminisms is an ongoing collaboration between Annie Goh, Marie Thompson, and others since 2015. At the core of the project are the questions: What might cyberfeminism, as a nebulous, ironic and irreverent feminist critique of early internet cultures have to offer contemporary sonic cultures? What might sound, listening and aurality reveal about cyberfeminism? The talk will have two parts: firstly, I will outline what Thompson and I call the ‘dotted line’ of pioneers, as the conventional way in which a feminist approach to the historicisation of experimental and electronic music is often conceived. I will then outline some alternative speculative origin stories we propose one might instead turn to. Secondly, I will draw on examples from the project from music, sound arts and media technologies to propose three critical ‘tools’ central to the project: de-tuning, attuning and retuning, illustrative of the ethos of sonic cyberfeminisms.

Dr Annie Goh is an artist and researcher. Her work, in its numerous forms from sound installation, composition and computer music to writing, performance and social practice, takes a critical approach to contemporary debates in the fields of digital technologies, media arts, generative and computational processes and communication studies, with a particular focus on sound, intersectional feminism, decolonial theory and the politics of knowledge production. She is Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in BA (Hons) Sound Arts at LCC, University of Arts London and where she is also a member of Creative Research In Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP). ‘Sonic Cyberfeminisms’ (Goldsmiths Press) co-authored with Dr Marie Thompson will be published in 2027, and ‘Echoes of Elsewhere (Bloomsbury Academic) by Goh is due for 2028.
