October 31, 2023: Camila Agosto Portrait Concert for American Academy in Berlin Deutsche Bank Fellowship in Music Composition: "In the Spaces Between"
Featuring the world premiere of 3 new works incorporating live electronics, spatialized sound, etc. The program was The Memory of Water Vol. I (solo viola, spoken word, and live electronics performed by Martine Kinsella Thomas and Camila Agosto), Interlude (fixed media), and Paracusia IV. hypnagogia (for solo baritone saxophone and live electronics, performed by Justin Massey).
In the spaces between features two compositions written by Camila Agosto that combine a range of multidisciplinary elements to create a unique musical experience. The first piece, “The Memory of Water Vol I,” is part of a new series of works that blend text, live composition, improvisation, electronics, and custom instruments. It was created in collaboration with Martine Thomas, a violist and poet.
The second composition, “Paracusia IV,” created in collaboration with Justin Massey, is part of a larger program consisting of five movements. It involves solo saxophone and live surround-sound electronics, through speakers placed around the performance space that emit live, recorded, and processed sounds. The performer reacts to these auditory “hallucinations”— also known as Paracusia— as they struggle against a multitude of spiraling voices.
