Praised by The New York Times for her “appealingly melancholic sound” and “entertaining array of distortion effects,” Alexandria Smith is a multimedia artist, audio engineer, scholar, trumpeter, and educator whose work bridges experimental music, technology, and interdisciplinary research. Her research explores the integration of creative practice and scholarship in music technology, including biofeedback, sensor-based interaction, and interactive media for performers, and has been published in Arcana: Musicians on Music X and presented at conferences and festivals including the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and MoxSonic. An active performer-composer and improviser, Smith has appeared at venues and festivals across the country, including The Stone, the Future of New Trumpet (FONT) Festival, French Quarter Fest, and the San Diego Symphony’s Hearing the Future Festival, collaborating with artists such as John Zorn, Billy Martin, and Wilfrido Terrazas. As a recording, mixing, and mastering engineer specializing in experimental and genre-crossing music, her work has been described by DownBeat as “splendidly engineered.” She co-produced and engineered Grammy-nominated bassist Mark Dresser’s Tines of Change, which received critical acclaim and recognition from DownBeat and other publications, and her work appears on labels including Pyroclastic Records, Black Truffle, and New Focus Recordings. Smith is currently an Assistant Professor of Music at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she directs the Creative Music Technology Lab (CMTL). She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego, an M.M. from Mannes School of Music with a concentration in Design and Technology Studies at Parsons, and a B.M. from Mannes.
