Gladstone Butler
Gladstone Butler is a classically trained percussionist who has performed as a soloist at the Kennedy Center, a professional Producer/DJ with multiple works charted in the Beatport Top 10, a technical audio engineer at Facebook Reality Labs, and a sound artist creating interactive installations that combine spatial audio, motion and reactive electronic soundscapes. Gladstone was born and raised in DC, and is currently based in New York.
Gladstone began his journey as a percussionist in high school. He was very passionate from the beginning, which led him to pursue a music performance degree at Carnegie Mellon, ultimately graduating with a self defined degree in “Percussion and Electronics: Practice and Theory”
As a producer and live act, Gladstone channels his rhythm-intense background, while blending atmospheres that are surreal on the surface level, but aim to explore the most real parts of us and our environments. Electronic dance music was an early and prominent influence on him, especially House and the culture surrounding it. The movement redefined inclusivity for the historically disenfranchised in America, and uncovered the power that sound and technology both have to bring people together.
As a mostly installation-focused sound artist, Gladstone creates immersive environments that give new context to the volume they take place in, often incorporating sounds from the area and creating an AR-esque experience.
Gladstone is a recent graduate of the MFA in Sound Art program at Columbia University.
