Advanced Mixed Music Composition explores creative uses of audio production tools (i.e., digital mixer, various DSP plug-ins, controllers, microphones, surround speaker arrays, etc.) and techniques (audio editing, mixing, performance simulations, synchronization, etc.), and looks at their impact on the aesthetics and poetics of a musical project. New to this semester, a heavy emphasis will be given to the production of live concerts (setting up simple PA systems, mic'ing musicians, and recording concerts, etc.) in order to fully understand the implications of the transition between the precisely controlled studio environment to the live concert hall. As such, students, under the supervision of the instructor, will be expected to oversee the audio related technical aspects of three Columbia Composers' concerts. After a number of weeks training with the digital mixer and related gear, and pre-planning for the concerts in class, students will then setup, run live sound, record the concert, strike the equipment, and later mix the recording. Please note that students must be available for two of the three concert days, for the full day (Sat. February 29, Sat. March 28; Sat. April 18). More theoretical ideas pertaining to the use of electronics will also be discussed (e.g., notation, portability, spatialization, synchronization, etc.) in the later part of the semester.
