Amplitude Versus Decibels

Amplitude is a convenient way to describe the loudness of sound mathematically. But audio engineers typically use "decibels" instead. Decibels correspond more closely with the way that humans perceive loudness.
decibels = 20 * log(amplitude)
To do:
  • Move the amplitude fader back and forth.
  • Notice how it gets loud right away when moving from left to right.
  • Move the decibels fader back and forth.
  • Notice how it is easier to adjust low volume levels using the decibel fader.
